Welcome to our Treehouse at Hakalau! The only way to stay closer to the ocean would be in a boat. Sit back and watch the cruise ships slowly pass by knowing that the passengers aboard are truly envying your incredible accommodations. This quaint and unassuming second story home offers a nearly 180 degree view of the mighty Pacific ocean where you can relax and watch whales as they suddenly breach the blue water, spinner dolphins playfully chase a passing fishing vessel and the rising sun as it welcomes you to an amazing array of morning colors.

Need more room? You can also rent the neighboring Cliffs at Hakalau - ask us if it is available for your dates. Sleeps six.

Immediately as you enter the home your attention is drawn to the vast ocean front windows and sliding glass doors that lead out to the huge deck. Here you can spend endless hours enjoying the cool breezes from the ocean, sipping on a morning cup of coffee or watching spinner dolphins and whales playfully swim by. During whale season, there may even be nights when you can hear the whales singing. The windows have blackout curtains to shade the interior and cool the house during peak sunshine hours.

The home features hardwood flooring and is well furnished with two spacious bedrooms. Both bedrooms offer comfortable queen beds and a nice size closet to store your belongings. The kitchen is immediately off of the living area with equally incredible ocean views. The kitchen comes furnished with a built-in range, full size refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster as well as pots, pans, dishes and other cooking utensils. The bathroom contains a large tub/shower combination, toilet, and spacious vanity. The ample windows in this home do a great job of allowing the comfortable trade breezes to flow throughout the home. Like the majority of homes in Hawai'i, we do not have air conditioning. We maintain a simple mindset in that when we get hot we open the windows and turn on the fan. When we get cold, we close the windows and put on socks :)

We are near Highway 19, 15 minutes to Hilo and only 20 minutes to the Airport.

Hilo is known for its warm aloha spirit, relaxed lifestyle, unique shops, art galleries and restaurants with local regional cuisine. Local attractions include Lyman Museum, East Hawaii Cultural Center, historic Palace Theatre, Pacific Tsunami Museum, Imiloa Astronomy Center, UH Hilo Performing Arts Center and Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens. Hilo Farmer's Market is a favorite for fresh, local produce. Merrie Monarch Festival, Hilo's premier hula competition and cultural event, is held annually. Hilo's black sand beaches are some of the best for snorkeling, diving, surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming with turtles and tropical fish, or watching the whales off shore. Take a helicopter volcano tour or short scenic drive to active Kilauea volcano to view a lava flow, ride horses in Waipio Valley or tour the summit and view the night skies of Mauna Kea.

We had never been to the Big Island. Our stay was close to Hilo attractions and it was relaxing, despite the rain, which we anticipated. The rental was clean and had the amenities we needed.

We loved our time at this home! It looked nice in the photos, but when we opened the door we were surprised at how much better it looks in person! We spent hours relaxing on that deck, sunbathing and watching the ocean. The view never gets old! We worried a little about no AC, but it wasn't a problem. Plenty of air flow, ocean breeze, temps were very moderate. We texted the on-island contact with a question and got a quick response. The place was super clean and had everything we needed. 20 minutes to Hilo, a little over an hour to great beaches. Would definitely stay again!

Amazing View of the Ocean!

We thoroughly enjoyed all five days! We spent the majority of our time on the back deck watching the waves, looking for whales (we saw plenty), and listening to the breakers crash into the cliffs below us. We had all our
meals outside. If you’re outdoorsy, there’s a ton to do within a short drive.
The house was clean and had everything we needed. The property as a whole is beautiful. There’s jungle to the right of property where we saw pigs and a lot of gorgeous birds. It’s simply an amazing property!

The only noteworthy concern we have is that the owner’s main house is also a rental. The owners were there the first days of our stay, but we rarely saw them (nice people!). A family of four showed up at the end of our stay. They rarely came outside and were off the grounds much of the time. We were thankful that we hardly saw them. Had they been outside often, played in the large lawn, were loud, etc., our experience would not have been as enjoyable. Our deck was high, so we could look down on everything they did including on their patio and inside their house. Our concern isn’t that two families can be on the grounds, it’s that it wasn’t clear enough in the advertisements and that’s something we feel should be exceptionally clear due to the lack of privacy both parties have.

As noted, we had a fantastic stay! Kekela, our contact at Salt Water was exceptionally pleasant to work with and was proactive in making sure all our needs were met.

We don't make a big deal of it, though, as we've been managing these homes for years and have never had privacy come up before. I think most guests are busy exploring or ocean gazing while they are here, as you mentioned. With two separate, individual homes on this large property, there's much more privacy than a hotel or condo would offer. We appreciate you mentioning it :-)

The treehouse stay was overall a pleasant experience.
Was only able to enjoy the lanai and view one day as it rained the others. Could you please control the weather next time. Found a nice gecko in the living room. Put him outside. Check the front gate as it did not close completely. Dave

We had a great stay at the Treehouse it was as beautiful in person as it is in the photos. The sunrises were spectacular, the sounds of the ocean waves were relaxing while sitting on the deck.
The kitchen was stocked with everything you would need. But the restaurants in Hilo are pretty good.

The magic started when we drove thru the security gate. The grounds are amazingly manicured and lovely. Walking into the Treehouse was breathtaking as we looked at the ocean. The green Anoles were there to greet us and the birds serenaded us all day. The kitchen was well supplied with essentials for cooking (the blender doubled as a coffee grinder quite nicely). The privacy and quiet area provided very restful sleep and a very relaxed atmosphere. We look forward to another stay in the future.

We enjoyed our stay at the Treehouse, how could we not with that view! The accommodations meet all our needs for a peaceful relaxing time. It has comfortable beds and a well equipped kitchen. We watched the cruise ships pass by and enjoyed our morning coffee on the deck. It is located close enough to Hilo for shopping and dining options, but far enough away to escape city traffic and bustle. Excellent customer service from start to finish. We will look at Salt Water Vacations before booking with another property management company. We look forward to staying here again. Mahalo.

I loved making my coffee in the well equipped kitchen and heading out onto the deck to take in the expansive ocean view. It's just far enough from Hilo to feel peaceful, but close enough to give you access to restaurants and activities. Loved the quiet Hakalau beach Park (walking distance) for swimming in a protected fresh pool and walking in the ocean surf.

Wee loved our time at The Treehouse! Unfortunately, we came during a wet few days, so didn't get to see much sunshine from the deck, but it didn't stop up from enjoying the stunning landscape. We enjoyed coffee on the large deck each morning, and loved listening to the birds and ocean waves at night. The home needs a little updating, but the new owners have clearly stated this is in the works. We were very comfortable here, and while we didn't get to see any whales or dolphins swimming past, we loved being able to sit outside, watch the ocean, listen to the waves crashing, and just rest. It was a perfect spot, and I would stay here again I'm a heartbeat!

Since you were here the new owners have: installed smoke detectors, installed nice quality headboards on both beds, purchased all new linens, added a new loveseat, new rugs, new dining set, new lanai furniture (nice quality) and lovely decor. We and the owners truly did the best we could with the situation and the bookings, like yours, that we inherited. Hopefully future guests will read multiple reviews including on us, the managers, at other properties to know that we stand by excellent service and well-maintained properties which Treehouse now is! Nice getaway from the snow and cold temps in WA. Rained a lot but the sun managed to find its way to the deck. The yard was beautiful, loved the wild baby pigs scampering from lot to lot, the roosters and a few mongoose sightings. Treehouse was as advertised and pictured, height gave a view of waves crashing in the cove to the south.

This location and the end of the road offers a quiet beautiful location for a vacation. You feel like you are in the trees looking out at the ocean. Very comfortable and cozy.
